OMGHey FAQ
Plain answers to the most common questions about OMGHey — how the live nights work, how matching happens, how safety is handled, and what makes the app different from swiping apps and anonymous chat sites.
What is OMGHey?
OMGHey is a live social app where people in their late teens through their early 30s meet new people through real-time one-on-one text and video chats. Instead of swiping through profiles, you go live at a scheduled time and get matched with someone new in your area for a short, real conversation.
How does OMGHey work?
Every Sunday and Wednesday night at 9 PM in your local time zone, you open the app and tap Go Live. The system pairs you with someone nearby for a one-on-one chat. After the chat ends you can match, skip, or extend.
What time does OMGHey start?
OMGHey goes live at 9 PM local time on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Sunday is video night. Wednesday is text night. The window stays open for roughly an hour, but the busiest minutes are the first fifteen.
How does Go Live work?
Tapping Go Live places you in the live pool. The app finds another active user near you whose preferences match yours, then opens a private chat. You don't browse profiles — the chat opens directly.
Is OMGHey free?
Yes. The core OMGHey experience — going live, getting matched, chatting, and matching with people you connect with — is free to use.
Is OMGHey a dating app?
OMGHey is a live social app. Many people use it for dating, others use it strictly to meet new people or make friends. It is not a swiping app and it isn't limited to romance.
Can I make friends on OMGHey?
Absolutely. Plenty of users specifically set their intent to friendship. The format — short, real conversations with people nearby — is well-suited to building friendships, not just romantic matches.
How does live text work?
On Wednesday nights, Go Live opens a real-time text chat with a matched person. You type back and forth in a private thread for a few minutes, then choose whether to keep talking, match, or move on.
How does live video work?
On Sunday nights, Go Live opens a one-on-one video call with a matched person. Cameras turn on, you talk face to face for a short window, and at the end you decide whether to extend, match, or skip.
How are matches chosen?
Matches are chosen from people who are live at the same moment as you, filtered by approximate location and a few basic preferences. The pool is real-time, not a curated feed.
What ages can use OMGHey?
OMGHey is for users 18 and older. There is a separate college-only experience for verified students.
How long are chats?
The default chat is short — usually a few minutes — long enough to actually meet someone, short enough to keep the bar low. If both people want to keep talking, they can extend.
Can I continue talking after the chat ends?
Yes. If both people tap match at the end of the chat, the conversation continues in your matches list and you can keep talking after the live window closes.
How does safety work on OMGHey?
OMGHey uses a combination of account verification, in-chat reporting, blocking, and moderation review. Bad actors are removed. The live format also helps — there is no anonymous lurking; if you're chatting, you're identifiable.
Can I report users?
Yes. Every chat has a report option. Reports are reviewed and result in warnings, suspensions, or permanent bans depending on severity.
Can I block users?
Yes. Blocking a user prevents them from being matched with you again and removes any prior chats from your matches list.
What happens if nobody answers?
If no match is found within a few seconds, the app re-queues you. Live nights are the busiest, so going live near 9 PM gets you the fastest pairings.
How do notifications work?
OMGHey sends a reminder shortly before each live night opens. You can also enable push notifications for match activity and event windows in your settings.
Is my identity verified?
Accounts are verified at signup. The college experience requires an .edu email; the general experience uses standard account verification and review of suspicious behavior.
What cities is OMGHey available in?
OMGHey works anywhere in the United States. Larger metros — New York, LA, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, DC, Philadelphia, Austin, Houston, Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Denver, San Diego, Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, Nashville, and dozens more — have the densest live pools.
What if I live in a small town?
Smaller cities still match — the radius widens automatically when the local pool is thin, so you'll meet people from the broader region rather than wait.
Do I need to use my real name?
Yes. OMGHey is built around real people meeting real people. You use a display name on your profile, but the account itself is verified to a real identity.
Do I need a profile photo?
Yes. A clear photo of you is required. It's part of what makes the live format feel honest.
Can I use OMGHey outside of live nights?
Outside the Sunday and Wednesday windows you can message existing matches, edit your profile, and prepare for the next live event. The live matching engine only runs at 9 PM local on event nights.
Why only Sunday and Wednesday?
Scheduling the live pool concentrates everyone at the same time. That's what makes the match happen in seconds instead of hours, and it's why chats feel busy instead of empty.
Why 9 PM?
9 PM local is the sweet spot — late enough that people are home and unwinding, early enough that it doesn't run into the next morning.
Is OMGHey on Android?
OMGHey launched on iOS first. Follow the OMGHey accounts for Android release updates.
Is there a web version?
The live experience is mobile-first because it depends on push notifications and the camera. The website is for information and signup; the live app is iOS.
Do I need to be on Wi-Fi for video?
No. Video chats work on cellular data, though Wi-Fi gives the cleanest call quality.
How much data does a video chat use?
A short video chat uses roughly the same data as a few minutes of a video call on any other app — typically well under 100 MB per session.
What if my camera or mic doesn't work?
OMGHey needs camera and microphone permission for Sunday video nights. If something isn't working, check the app's permissions in iOS Settings under OMGHey.
Can I pause being live mid-chat?
You can end a chat at any time by tapping skip. Ending a chat puts you back in the live pool unless you exit the live screen entirely.
Can I extend a chat?
Yes. When the timer runs out, both people are asked if they want more time. If both tap yes, the chat extends.
What does matching actually do?
Matching is a mutual signal at the end of a chat. If both people match, the conversation moves into a private thread in your matches list so you can keep talking past the live window.
Can I see who matched with me?
Mutual matches show up in your matches list. One-sided likes are not surfaced — both people have to choose to keep talking.
Will the other person see if I skipped?
No. Skips are silent. The other person isn't notified one way or the other.
Is there a queue or limit per night?
There's no hard limit. As long as the live window is open, you can keep getting matched with new people.
What is the college experience?
OMGHey for college is a separate, .edu-verified pool. Only verified students can join, which makes for a tighter community and easier overlap with people you'll actually see on campus.
How do I verify as a student?
Sign up with your .edu email. Verification is automatic for accredited U.S. schools.
What if I just graduated?
You can use the general OMGHey experience. The .edu-only pool is for currently enrolled students.
Can I switch between college and general?
Your account is tied to your verification status. If you graduate, you'll move to the general experience.
What languages does OMGHey support?
The app is English-first. In Miami and a few other markets, bilingual English–Spanish chats are common.
Is OMGHey LGBTQ-friendly?
Yes. Preferences for who you want to be matched with are flexible, and OMGHey enforces a strict anti-harassment policy.
How does OMGHey compare to Omegle?
OMGHey is closer to a live, identity-verified, location-aware version of Omegle. Real accounts, real people, and matches that stay connected if you want them to.
How does OMGHey compare to Tinder, Bumble, or Hinge?
Swiping apps are async — you scroll, like, wait, message, hope. OMGHey is synchronous — everyone shows up at 9 PM, you actually talk, and you know within minutes if there's something there.
How does OMGHey compare to Monkey or Chatroulette?
Monkey and Chatroulette are anonymous and unscheduled. OMGHey is verified, scheduled, and location-aware, which makes it dramatically safer and dramatically more useful for meeting people you might actually see again.
Why does OMGHey use a live window instead of always-on?
Always-on apps mean empty pools most of the time. A live window concentrates everyone at the same moment, which is what makes the matching feel instant.
Is there a desktop app?
No. Video, audio, and push notifications are all built around mobile.
